ABOUT
In 1988, snowboarding culture and the industry were experiencing rapid growth. At the time, many young people passionate about snowboarding were launching new brands, ranging from large corporations to independent garage companies. Los Angeles snowboarder and brand founder Mike Maceda was one of them. PLAINSANE was born in a garage he shared with a friend. As stated in the company's early catalog, "Plain sane makes insane snowboard accessories and clothing," the brand began as a brand of insane (super cool) snow accessories.

"I started the company because at the time, snowboarding was still young and there was a lot of room for improvement. I needed to create accessories to make things better, and I thought I could do it in a different style," Mike recalls.

Snowboarding, once heavily influenced by surfing, began to take on a strong skateboarding influence in the '90s. Meanwhile, snowboarding's recognition as a sport gradually progressed, and it embarked on a path to industrial and cultural diversification. Meanwhile, PLAINSANE, created by Mike, who grew up in Los Angeles street culture, and his friends (alternative riders rather than mainstream scene riders), was quickly embraced by young people whose street style, featuring baggy pants, flannel shirts, and sunglasses, was becoming mainstream on snowy mountains at the time. These products, brimming with counterculture flair and humor—including the four-horned "jester hat," various fleece beanies, fire pattern designs, and gold chain wallets—became hugely popular as important fashion pieces among snowboarders in the midst of the new school movement.

PLAINSANE grew to become a defining brand of the times, but in the late 1990s, the overheated market suddenly cooled down and the brand went into hibernation.
This legendary brand, which was sadly and suddenly departed, made its long-awaited comeback in the fall of 2024.
